More than 20 local children have taken part in Cookie Elves 2017, a unique Christmas project in which youngsters bake homemade cookies and swap them for wrapped toys and gifts to pass onto local charities. In its second year, ‘Cookie Elves’ 2017 saw 23 elves aged between one and fifteen collect a whopping 395 presents, with some still being donated, far surpassing the original target of one hundred and fifty.

A ground breaking ceremony took place on 28th November 2017 to mark the beginning of the ‘Big Purple Build’ – a project to create a new Preston Road Women’s Centre in Hull. Hobson & Porter is the main contractor for, what is believed to be, the first purpose-built women’s centre in the UK for 20 years. The team will be on site for the next nine months working on the building, which will have a low environmental impact to minimise ongoing running costs.

Hobson & Porter unveiled its new Assisted Living show home to Hull City councillors, mental health groups, potential customers and local media in a series of open days in November.

The team from Hobson & Porter’s Minor Works division was contracted for the fit out of the two-up, two-down home on Bexhill Avenue in East Hull, which is designed to show off a range of technology created to enable people with learning disabilities to live more independently.

The innovative features include everything from a voice activation television set to a set of self-stopping taps that stop a bath overflowing using magnetic fields.

REDUCED SIZE whole venue

The region’s biggest co-located construction trade and careers event, Foundations Live, returned to Bishop Burton College on Thursday 21st September after a successful launch in 2016.

Hobson & Porter created the Foundations programme to address the skills gap in the industry and help to build a sustainable workforce in our region. Foundations Live – a collaboration between construction firm Hobson & Porter, Jewson and Bishop Burton College – brings that concept into a live event space.

Gymnasium

Bransholme Fire Station, Hobson & Porter’s third project for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service in the last two years, was completed this summer. The Minor Works team began the process of upgrading the station’s internal facilities in November 2016, with a refurbishment contract including fitting a new boiler room, gymnasium, welfare pods, appliance bay, dormitories and shower facilities, and refurbishing the existing kitchen.

The main challenge for the Hobson & Porter team was to keep the station running smoothly while all work was done.

During the summer of 2017, Hobson & Porter handed over a major project to extend and refurbish Priory Primary School and improve Priory Children’s Centre for Hull City Council. It represents one of 14 schools worked on this year by Hobson & Porter, with each being complete in time for the 2017/18 academic year.

At Priory Primary School, Hobson & Porter created a refurbished junior building to accommodate a greater intake of pupils. Infants now occupy the existing school building,

Foundations Live is Yorkshire and Humberside’s biggest co-located construction trade and careers event. The result of a collaboration between Hobson & Porter, Jewson and Bishop Burton College, the first event in 2016 was a great success and saw pupils of all ages, including career changers, introduced to the wealth of career and training options available within construction. Foundations Live 2017 is set to build on the success.

On September 21st, Foundations Live 2017 moves to the equine arena at Bishop Burton College.

Hobson & Porter was delighted to receive a runner’s-up trophy in the Ivor Goodsite Hoarding Competition, a national initiative from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

The site team at Woodford Leisure Centre received the trophy in recognition of the artwork from three local schools displayed on the hoarding around the site. Pupils from St. Anne’s Community Special School in Welton, and Estcourt Primary Academy and Mersey Primary Academy, both in Hull, produced artwork which is currently on display around the site perimeter on Holderness Road.

Summary:

  • The Guild of Bricklayers Yorkshire heat took place at Hull College on Friday 16th June
  • The competition was attended by colleges from across the region entering construction students into the senior and junior categories
  • Hobson & Porter, Jewsons and Buck & Hickman have pledged support to the competition

Construction students from across the region have battled it out in an intense one-day competition to test their bricklaying skills against the clock.
